He received a B.S. degree in Geography from the Anhui Normal University (1985) and the M.S. in Physical Geography from Henan University (1988) and Ph.D. in Ecology from the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences (2001). As a visiting scholar in Mawson Graduate Center for Environmental Studies, the University of Adelaide, Australia in 1996.
